Ivy Park Road
This ordinary bungalow dating from the 1970ís was transformed into a dramatic house by replacing the low pitched roof with one much steeper. This allowed the interior space to be used to its full potential. An open plan living space was created with a feature staircase leading to a galleried studio and an additional bedroom and bathroom on the first floor.
The external form of the building is simply stated with the dominant roof oversailing the original brick walls below. New windows are simple rectangles punched through the walls to add to the uncomplicated shape and appearance. The simple exterior gives no impression of the dramatic transformation inside. Internally there is a great contrast to the original traditional layout, with the central gallery running over the living area, linking the airy studio with the sleeping accommodation.
This single storey extension to an existing detached stone cottage in Sheffield provides a sunny lounge looking out over the garden and the Rivelin Valley. Also in the extension are a ground floor toilet and a new entrance hall. A multi-fuel stove gives a focal point and a cosy secondary heat source in the new room. Constructing the extension allowed the kitchen to be re-configured to form a useful breakfast area.
